Im in Minneapolis too. I as at the dealership last week to get wiper blades and decided to look at the defenders on the lot. I can NOT believe they are selling defenders with 4cyl motors. That is so cray to me. My LR3 is a V8. I can't imagine getting a Land Rover and it have a motor smaller than my E350 (V6). WTH!

LR3 V8 numbers:
- 300 bhp
- 315 lb-ft (torque)
- Curb Weight: 5,700 lbs
Defender P300 (4 cyl) numbers
- 296 bhp
- 295 lb-ft (torque)
- Curb Weight: about 5,000 lbs (110 S)
So a 4-cyl Defender has a better power to weight ratio than an LR3 V8.

Today’s 4 cyl engines have come a long way.
LR3 V8 numbers:
- 300 bhp
- 315 lb-ft (torque)
- Curb Weight: 5,700 lbs
Defender P300 (4 cyl) numbers
- 296 bhp
- 295 lb-ft (torque)
- Curb Weight: about 5,000 lbs (110 S)
So a 4-cyl Defender has a better power to weight ratio than an LR3 V8.

I too was apprehensive about the 4 cyl (I've got the older JLR v6 in an XF). But honestly, in daily driving the base engine feels quite good. It's a heavy truck and there are times when the weight is felt, but I'll take that and 20mpg and $12k savings all day long. Especially since the 6 is a mild hybrid and that introduces a whole new set of technical variables that I'm wary about in terms of longevity. (Not to mention I wanted the steelies which meant the 4cyl anyway).

I was really surprised how much I liked the 4cyl. The power delivery was very smooth, and seemed more than capable. My old '03 Discovery had ~ 217hp and 300lb-ft torque. It required premium, and at best got 12/16mpg. Even with a 26 gallon fuel tank, I was aware of the term "range anxiety" long before Teslas were ever invented. With what appears to be real-world mpg on the 4cyl of ~ 20mpg, I'm really looking forward to getting into a P300!

Clubguy- did you order from Minneapolis JLR (Luther Group) or Richfield JLR (Morries Group)? I ordered from Richfield, they’re new and not super knowledgeable but pretty easy to work with so far. As long as you do you’re homework and know what you want you should be ok with them.
I’m pretty sure my $5k deposit is refundable if I change my mind.

Did you get an agreement when you put the money down? I hate to do it too, but if so read thru it and it will tell you if it's refundable or not. If you have no paperwork, it will likely fall onto your side if you have to litigate. If you paid via check, you'll need to lawyer up. If you paid via credit card, you'll likely be able to dispute the charge.
