That is interesting.... I travelled through some dark tunnels over the weekend with the standard headlights and I remember thinking they are not really that bright. When I ordered the vehicle, I did not appreciate that the headlights are good for the life of the vehicle and wondered why an upgrade of a headlight was offered.

yeah, for me the 110's bed length is too short, it's several inches shorter (8"?) than my D5. I wouldn't be able to fit my 6' snowboard bag in there unless I lifted it over the seat cushions and squished it against a seat back. that's a problem.

also, you have to be aware of the (UK sided!) swing gate too when street parking and whether you are going to want to use it or not... and hope no one pulls up to your bumper while you're gone if you have groceries to put in, lift gates need less clearance. I heard complaints from a sister who had a Lexus GX about her swing gate all the time.

Nice thing about Defenders. Somebody pulls up to your bumper, you just push them back...

Maybe we will have a lot more potential Discovery 5 owners purchasing a Defender in 2021?

I noticed on both the U.K. and North America JLR websites that the 2021 Discovery does not offer: a dual-range transfer case, a rear locking differential, Terrain response 2, wheel sizes which support off-road driving, or a diesel engine (in North America). The Ford engines are gone, replaced in North America by the P300 4 cyl and a smaller version of the P400 6 cyl. mild hybrid. It seems JLR wasted no time in sending the Discovery solely on the 7 seat mall and school SUV runs?

So now, it seems two vehicles are necessary in the product lineup to serve targeted buyers of the prior Discovery 4 (LR 4) and the only Land Rover vehicles which could be considered a proper 4WD (w/dual range) are the Defenders, Range Rover and Rover Rover Sport (as an option)?

If not, it will eat away the defender market as size wise the discovery is more practical but name wise defender is the ultimate machine.

you have to look at the standard list of items and also expand the options to see what's there. For the D5 I think Terrain Response 2 was included with the Advanced off road Capability Pack (checked, yes it is). Twin-speed transfer box (high/low range) is standard on the HSE. Active Rear Locking Differential is an $1100 option.

The lack of diesels though are disappointing. I've mentioned before that I believe at least one of the new MHEV diesels will be coming to NA eventually (based on media talk earlier in the year). I'm about ready to put in an order for a D5 that would be included in the first wave of units that will be delivered in March '21. But I may wait and see if the diesel rumors firm up first and wait it out.

Great detailed write up. My S model P300 does have great seats for heating and cooling but I had optioned them up to Windsor. I did notice a couple of nits that were (past tense) like mine. I started defaulting to left side of road, reading traffic signs in round UK format and having auto high beam assist default off 2.0.4 and now 2.0.5 seem to have put all my gremlins to rest. I didn’t have Adaptive Speed Limiter (kinds a different gizmo), then I did and now I don’t. Told by salesman it wasn’t supposed to be in our market. Do t really care anyway but that’s about the level of my issues. I think given the pandemic and the fact that engines and vehicles are made in two different countries I can live with a new model and some software glitches on peripheral items. Especially since they have been cured. Only real gripe is where could I go to just see what is in the hopper on software fixes and when I might expect a new one and for what before it arrives in the night. This SOTA is a new process for them and I think much like an App,e device they will have to refine that updating process and information.

Do you enjoy the mpg of the Discovery diesel? If so, the P400 has about an average combined 16mpg. Had a leased gasoline 2020 Discovery for a few days before I reversed the deal and financed a 2020 Defender SE P400 instead. If the Discovery was diesel, not so sure would have made the switch. Plus, the interior cabin noise is much quieter in the Discovery but to me the Defender is more fun overall to drive and the infotainment / camera system are second to none. The rumor is that JLR is releasing a diesel Defender sometime in 2021 for the US. If it weren't the Defender or if the economy tanks, would be driving a new diesel Wrangler. Maybe wait until the diesel Defender is available?
