Thanks @umbertob ! I just placed an order for the backing plates. Maybe I will just make one for the first aid kit and see if that works. Would be nice to have the storage space again.
p.s. Good to see you on another forum. If my memory serves me, I think I remember you from RR.net, and maybe one or two others.

Wow, good memory... I miss the old rr.net forum, that was a fun place to be.
An advantage of having gasoline cans mounted above the fill door on that side molle plate is that you don't really need to remove them when it's time to refill the tank, which is a blessing here, with those incredibly annoying CARB compliant "Eco" spouts supplied here in California that routinely jam, break, leak or, even when they work, are slow and cumbersome to use and you always end up spilling some fuel on your hands, on the car, on the ground... Dangerous and making the problem they are designed to fix actually worse.
I just toss one of those inexpensive "shaker" 6-ft self priming siphon fuel hoses in my tool bag, when positioned properly they completely empty a 2.5 gallon gasoline can into the fuel tank in less than a minute, mess free and you never need to remove the cans from their mount on the molle plate, you just take them off when filling them at a gas station.
Sorry, off-topic.
