Winter Romp 2019
Winter Romp is just around the corner, man time is flying. My LR3 is almost ready to roll for the 2600 mile round trip to Waterville ME for.the great time that is Winter Romp. Probably one of the oldest longest running events in the US for Land Rover lovers.
intro for details. Hope to see you there, if you see me come up say hi and get a www.landroverforums.com sticker |
I cannot believe it is already here! This is an event that is on my bucket list and once again I can’t make it this year. Looking like we are going to be moving again soon but thankfully staying in the good ole’ South. I will have to enjoy it through your photos along the way there and at the event. |
Yup time sure flies. This time last year I was throwing my truck together for the trip. I started earlier this year but I'm still busy throwing land rovers together lol
|
All packed up. I have to square away a few things around the house tomorrow. I should be on the road to Romp by 2pm with a little luck.
|
I wish I was closer to Maine. |
I wish I could go. This is (was...?) my annual ski trip weekend to Sugarbush/Mad River and to add insult to injury I’ll be only 4.5 hours away from Benton, with my Disco no less!!! This is her maiden voyage more than about an hour from home so a beat down in the high country 9 hours from home probably wouldn’t be the smartest thing I could do this weekend. So far the first 3.5 hours to New Haven CT went as smoothly as I could have hoped, and it wasn’t until I got there that a coworker from back in PA told me he was going to the Winter Romp. He and his brother-in-law will be there in a D1. They did Muddy Chef last July and I figured this ski trip would be a good shakedown for the next MC this July. Best wishes at the Romp, it looks like a blast and I’ll add that to the 2020 event list. |
It's one of the best and I think has been on going since 1987 Bruce Fowler is one of those pillars of the rover community.
Through go-fund me the money was secured to purchase 160 acres that encompasses the bulk of the winter romp trail system. The trails had previously been used through friendly neighbor agreement but now they are secure for use for many years to come. It was simply stunning to watch the rover community raise the needed funds of $40,000 in less the 2 days time. A huge thank you is owed to Peter Voller who spearheaded the fund raiser making Winter Romp a continuing tradition. |
About 3 hours out from Winter Romp, in a hotel for the night before the final push to Waterville. Shaping up to be a fantastic year. |
Up and ready to hit the road. Quick stop for some coffee and breakfast and down the road we go! |
What? No pic of coffee cup on hood of LR3? UNACCEPTABLE :disco: |
|
Is this a pre-run before everyone shows up tomorrow? How deep is the snow? Any forecast for snow or will it be a clear day?
|
Have fun. Get as many pics as you can. |
It has rained, snowed and I am pretty sure it sleeted for a few minutes today.
Today was the first day of Romp yesterday was trail beaking. It was fantastic out. Awesome trails. Lot of winching but so much fun https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...bbd8e1c439.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...e759689542.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...dc809f7fd6.jpg |
|
I’m diggin the pictures. More please! |
The new Discovery is so frekin ugly, lol. I'm sure it does well but man it is awful looking even with the cool L8 wrap. Just my opinion folks, relaxx.
|
The D5 is a pretty polarizing truck. You either love it or hate it. I love the truck but the license plate drives me nuts and makes the trailer hitch seem off center to. Would I still drive one? Yes I would. Had a great group dinner with a great bunch of folks from NELRC tonight. Pretty sure an entire lobster colony was wiped out for our dinner but it was crazy good. Tomorrow we are starting Romp right with a stop for breakfast at Big G’s |
I can’t wait to get another truck just to take to this event each year. |
LR3 is calling you...
Good morning from Big G's and Winter Romp https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...def76d1e6f.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/landrov...f54fb3b4c2.jpg |
Seeing the pics makes me think the trails are great for riding. Doesn’t look like a ton of snow but enough to be fun. Hopefully you spend quality time riding all day and not winching. |
Tracks
I just watched a video here the winter romp 2013 I think and there was a defender with tracks installed in place of wheels.
That looks awesome, I wonder how good that works & if that's hand made or if they are sold someplace. Any thoughts on this? |
There are several companies that make drive on or bolt on versions of tracks. Mattracks(sp) make versions from utv to 1 ton truck that bolt on in place of your rims that are amazing in snow and marshes. They don’t do as well in rocky terrain. |
I'm just realizing that this is now, this weekend.......I'm only 3 exits North, fantastic weather today!
|
It was worth the drive just for Big G’s! So the trails were awesome today had a blast out there so many awesome Rovers, and a great time catching up with old friends. Also made a few dozen new ones. The Rover community is awesome on forums like this but in person you realize this only scratches the surface of the family that is Land Rover. |
Yeah, seems to be just the right amount of snow.

It was fantastic on Saturday morning the snow had a bit of layered ice on top that made some sections pretty special. It did make for some really good wheeling. The Saturday night bar crawl was really good but unfortunately really signals the end of Romp for me as I have to start the trek home. I have seen a tracked series rove most every year but didn’t see him out and about this year. |
My google assistant apparently got bored while I was driving home and took it upon itself to make a video of some of my photos and clips so here you go the instagram users. And the YouTube users |
|
Once again it was an amazing event. It was probably one of the best Romp’s I have been to in years. The trails were all marked and labeled there was mapping you could view along with directions of travel. So the typical log jams were avoided and it showed in the wheeling. Bruce Fowler has been the man putting this on for the community since 1987 and is a pillar of the rover community. A big thank you to him and his family probably the most gracious hosts in the free world. The Waterville Grand Hotel’s staff really shined and the added bonus of a complimentary hot breakfast was amazing. I know all hotels offer that, but not what they are offering for accommodations and eats for $55 a night. The limo to take us around to bars on Saturday night was fantastic and made sure we got around safely. The amount of money raised for Habitat for Humanity was sizeable the fun and comradary could not be matched. My hotel reservation is already made for next year and a dinner reservation for 15. Romp 2020! |
Not mine. Pulled from the World Wide Web: Another: It appears that you need 2+ inches of lift and good tires to navigate the trails. The white D2 @5:40 has a good setup. Hits the tree lol. |
There was a white D1 no lift with chains that did fantastic. Owner was super friendly as well |
Would a simple air locker have prevented some of these folks from getting stuck or was is just super slick and winching is inevitable. |
Depends on the situation. A locker was a handicap in quite a few sections of trail with the trail slick as heck and off camber. When the locker engaged it just slide the truck right off into the trees. This made the winch the only ootopt for going forward. One of the best I saw for getting around was a 90 with duratrac tires and only cdl.

The Range Rover Sport is on 32.5" and air suspension.
The LR3 in the picture is on 32" and air suspension. I am on 32.5" and coil conversion |

Similar trucks so it's easy to confuse them
|
Finally had a chance to watch the videos, good stuff. And although it looks like fun and temps didn't look to horrible...l'd still be hard pressed to play in the snow anymore.

The weather aside from the bit of rain on Friday was phenomenal. You should make the trek at least once if your a Rover owner. Waterville is a must experience. |
