93 defender 110...worth buying?

hey there-well, our daughter will soon be handed the keys to myland cruiser FJ62. so, its time for me to do some 4wd shoppin again :D... I've always wanted a defender 90, but the '93 110 is looking more+ more appealing to me and the wifey. the new 110 svx is super-nice, but, we're not in aussieland. :(a 110 would be perfect for us cuz we want to take the family plus canines cross-country, up the coastand someday, down to s. america. we would use the 110 mainly for light-med trails+ camping trips, no sand-dunes or heavy rock-crawling, except maybe rubicon (someday)... I don't know much about landys at all. I'd like some input. pls convince me why I should or shouldn't buy a 110, or at least what to expect and aniticpate w/ a 1101st, what gives? why are they selling for so much? there are two selling in so cal for over $50k!! is it because only 525 were brought into n. america? rarity = $$$$??what are the quirks about this rig, likedriveability, off-roading, tranny, gas mileage, differentials, etc.? and what mods do most 110 owners usually do? pics would definitely help too!cheers, jz

They are way overpriced IMO due to how few were imported.
They have all the same issues as other Land Rovers that age.

thx for your .02 anti...I agree that the 110s are somewhat overpriced, esp. in this economy. D90s are lookinga tadaffordable now.

but, coming from the land of landcruisers -w/o an ounce of knowledge w/ rovers- what exactly are these common, 'same issues' the 110 or 90 might have as other rovers? is it transfer case, bad seals, suspension, leaks...?

RE: 93 defender 110...yes or no?

there are not many rovers that are worth more now than it sold originally for. if i could have any NAS spec. land rover any year it would be the 93 110. quoting from "a land rover retrospective 1987-1998"
509 defender 110's imported into USA "one defender 110 was painted black, nine were originally unnumbered prototypes"
25 more defender 110'S were imported in to Canada for a
total of 534. it took a year for England
to hand build 534 of them. MSRP 39,900 US dollars
rear drum brakes and rear Salisbury differential.

some problems are leaking stuff, head gaskets, intake gaskets, rocker cover gaskets, t-box, swivel balls, water pump, timing cover gasket. that year still has a distributor, cap and rotor and 14cux engine management system. non ODBII.

hope this helps.

RE: 93 defender 110...yes or no?

thx raid-

I happened to be driving by peter's shopat huntington auto, in san marino & noticed a 110 in their lot- that's when I found out thatthey're sellingit, although its not publically listed for sale. this one is no.17 from canada, with the gas furnace. there's also another 110 for sale in costa mesa. I mean for $50k, it'snot chump change, esp.for a 10 y.o vehicle.

regarding the leaky stuff, are the gaskets just poorly designed or perhapsthey are cracking in harsher/colder climates? maybe 110 owners in so cal don't have these issues...dunno, just a thought.

the wifey was discouraged w/both 110's asking price, soit looks like we maybe settlingsettling for a 95-97 D90, soft-top or hard-top...we'll see.

not cracking the piggy bank..yet

well, after a heart to heart talk w/ the wifey, we're holding off on breaking the piggy bank. you guessed it, economy :(. IMO, they are still a bit overpriced -maybe if the price came down another $10k, I would reconsider. in the meantime, I'll continue building our FJ62 LandCruiser for our daughter...my defender will have to wait.
