Dfender engines, TDi 200 or 300 ?

Hey guys, you may need to turn ya monitors on their side as im sending this form the other side of the planet, but here gos.

Im looking at buying at 96 fender, it has 250 000 kms on the clock

I currently drive a series 3 77 ex army, so this will be a bit of a step up!

What dramas do the Tdi 200 have, is the 300 that much better?

this vehcile will be used in very hilly terrain, and bad mud covered tracks, for the most part.

Hope you are all being nice to your landys , and have them somewhere warm tonight.

RE: Dfender engines, TDi 200 or 300 ?

There's not a huge amount to choose between them AFAIK.

The 200 sounds a bit rougher and is less 'refined' - it also uses a (slightly) uprated version of the old series landy gearbox, the LT77 (LT77S in the 200 Tdi). That said there's less electrical stuff in the engine bay so, in theory at least, with a snorkel fitted it should be more reliable than a 300 if you do a lot of fording in deep water. Early 200Tdi's have drum brakes on the rear. Post 1992/3 have discs all round.

The 300 is quieter, smoother and has the stronger (allegedly) R380 gearbox. All 300Tdis are discs front and rear.

That's about where the differences end tbh. Both are permanent 4x4, coil sprung and about the best thing off road you'll come across. The're also identical in terms of external and internal dimensions, interior trim (barring very minor details)

Hope that helps the choice,

Adam.
