1999 D1 Engine Swap?

Hi you all, I've been away in the Sheetzuki forum for a while due to a short fling with a '92 JLX 4 doors. I need this JLX for temporary use while I replace the DI engine.
The DI has 227,000Km and for the last 50,000+ km the engine chatters a lot. I change the oil before 3,000 with Rotella T but the chatter got gradually worse. The oil goes black after 4 to 6 fill ups, no black smoke and a little margarine (mostly 4 to 6 short trips a day with 4 to 6 long trips a week).
The chatter starter on overrun (going down long hills using engine braking) and soon avoided engine braking.
Then the chatter came upon exiting the highway, needed a couple of minutes to go away.
Now it occasionally doesn't chatter, most of the time I can hear it on the highway.
The noise comes from the left side and it's there even when I remove the serpentine belt.
Engine was never overheated.

I've found the same engine complete with alternator, starter, etc for $1,200 delivered, no warranty.
I plan to go see it and hear it in 6 weeks, hopefully even aid in the removal.

Can anyone direct me to a write-up on GEMS engine swap?

How about remove the rocker cover (or listen to it with a yard stick to your ear). May be something easier, like a rocker arm. With 141K miles, you have time left on that engine.

OK, I remember how to do it, but it was a long time ago.
Looks like I have a good reason to cancel Easter with the Outlaws this year.
"Honey, where is my mechanic suit?"
