94 Disco Update
 

If anyone remembers, I bought a 94 disco back in June for what I felt was a great price. So far, So good ... It's been my daily driver and has yet to give me any problems (keeping my fingers crossed). Here's what I've done so far:

1. replaced radio- radio only picked up the weatherband when I bought it ... bought a used radio from a 97 disco on ebay for $25 with the VIN# from the truck it came from ... went to my local land rover dealer and they gave me the code. switched out the radios and the radio works great now!
2. changed oil & filter ( shell rotella 15w-40 with K&N filter)
3. changed fluid in both diffs (cheap 80/90)
4. changed fluid in transfer case (lucas synthetic)
5. replaced the faded stone shields on the hella 3000 lights on the roof with hella lamp grills from atlantic british)
6. changed air filter
7. adjusted emergency brake- when I bought it the truck sometimes would slip out of park when parked on an incline and the emergency brake wasnt very good ... previous owner said it was a worn parking pawl ... got under the truck and adjusted the emergency brake at the drum with 11mm wrench and the e-brake is like new again. havent addressed the parking pawl problem yet but it hasnt been giving me any problems as long as I put in neutral, set the e-brake, and then put it in park before exiting the vehicle)
8. greased drive shafts and serviced swivel housings

I'll try to put up some pics soon! Thanks for all help I've received from this forum in the process of buying the disco and reading up on how to care for it! Here's a list of things I plan on tackling in the future ...

1. coolant flush
2. get to the bottom of the check engine light (throws code for IACV but it idles fine and drives with no problem)
3. replace rusty floor panels- saw the thread on here where the guy's floor panels were totally rusted out ... mine arent that bad but I do want to replace them before they get there ... any tips on this beyond what has already been posted will be appreciated! I can't find anyone who sells them so I may have to go his route and just use some diamond plated sheet metal

I love my '94 DI and I'm glad to hear yours is treating you well too. Mine hit 94K this morning as I was out on errands.

As far as your transmission, if it is the parking pawl don't worry about it because addressing that problem will be more bother than it's worth. It seems like you've got the main issue of it rolling under control with adjusting the e-brake.

Since your radiator is "old" and made of copper and brass, it can be acid flushed and rodded out. Best shops for this are small indy places that do farm and construction equipment plus trucks and cars. About $60 in my area. You remove the rad and take it to them, they un-solder a side tank, and push a special tool through to knock out the calcium build up that the hot acid does not dissolve. Fan clutch should be firm to turn when warm, not free wheel. Go back with green / yellow coolant and distilled water.

hows the back floor? im just gonna grind away the rust. serious rust treater on all of it. rust proof paint it. the few holes I have I'll rivet steel sheets and maybe bondo. then i'm gonna herculiner it. ....then i'm gonna hang it. then tar and feather it....nah I love her.

I'm no good with body work, but I have a buddy who works with sheet metal and restores classic cars so I'm hoping he can help me out one weekend

how do you like the rhinoliner. can you pull stuff across it or it sticks. is it shiny and glittery? does it scratch? did you roll it on thick or a few times. just curious.

Thats one sweet looking rover. I would do a coolant flush before it gets cold out! That way you know your water concentration.

Nice! how do you like the Goodyears on there? I'm getting ready for new tires and have been passively researching.
