94 Transmission

Can someone tell me if there are any differences between the automatic transmissions in the '94 & '95 vs the '96 and newer D1's?

The only real issue is with the torque convertor. If you have a '94 or '95 Discovery you can use a later (DI of course) transmission but the torque converter won't fit. The same goes for using an early transmission with a later DI.

Thanks.

Are they all computer controlled or are the '94 / '95 automatic transmissions non-computer controlled?

Paul Grant 06-23-2017 09:50 PM

No, the transmissions in the DI's are not computer controlled. The DII ZF 4HP22 transmission is computer controlled. That is why you cannot use a DII transmission on a DI.

The only difference between the 4HP22 transmission found on 14CUX Land Rovers (1990-1995 RRC's and DI's) and GEMS Land Rovers (1996-1999 DI's) is the fact that GEMS Land Rovers as a result of OBDII requirements, had crank sensors whereas earlier (OBDI 14CUX) Land Rovers did not. The need for a change in the flex plate, gear ring assembly that included a ring for providing pulse to the crank sensor in OBDII/GEMS models necessitated the change in torque convertors. Hence the reason why 1996 and later torque convertors will not work on earlier transmissions (and vice versa). There is nothing that is different between a 1994/95 DI or RRC transmission and a 1996/99 DI transmission besides the torque convertor.

Thanks Paul. That is what I wanted to know.

On a side note, do you happen to have the part number handy for the Mallory distributor you used (saw that in other posts).

I just picked up a rebuilt '94 3.9 at a good price. It was rebuilt by a local shop I trust, back in 2012, but never picked up. It's going in my '96 manual transmission. I plan to run a carb instead of the GEMS electronic injection. It didn't come with the distributor...

Sorry, I used that Mallory about ten years ago.

I was wondering about the D1 transmissions because I was, for a while considering putting the 3.9 in a D2 body I have, and was looking to see if a D1 transmission could be installed behind it, but thought I'd have computer control issues if some D1 transmission were computer controlled and some not. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I think the D1 transmission are a bit shorter than the D2 transmissions. Is that correct?

Roger that, thanks.

I think you might be confusing 4HP22 transmissions with 4HP24 transmissions. The DII had an electronically controlled 4HP22 from 1999-2002. When the DII engine was moved up to the 4.6L from the 4.0L Rover went with the stronger 4HP24 transmission (also electronically controlled). So, the 2003 and 2004 DII's have a variety of parts (even the chassis) that reflect the difference in the overall size of the different transmission.

I see.

So you're saying:

the D1's used a non computer controlled 4HP22 (with the torque converter difference between '94-'95 and '96-'99 D1's),

the '99-'02 D2's used a computer controlled 4HP22

and the '03-'04 D2's used a computer controlled 4HP24?

Sounds like I might be able to swap a non-computer controlled D1 transmission into '99-'02 D2's, but not '03 & '04 D2's due to a change in the mounting points? Which is bad news since my spare body is an '04...
