96 landrover stuck in park
Hey there Landy owners, has anyone ever experienced this issue? My Disco wont turn over in park. It is getting good voltage to the starter, but the starter will not turn. Here's what happened. I was at a local walmart, and it was icy, i almost slid into a parked car, so to avoid that I tried to throw it into park. Now it will not start out of park. Is there a cable that I might have stretched out the linage to the transmission, or have I killed the tranny? It made some noise after throwing it into park, but then I drove it home. Drove it to work and home on monday, too. Now it just sits there, one loud click. Does anyone have a repair for tightening the linkage to turn off the inhibitor? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had this happen to me once. All I had to do was shove it into drive. (it obviously wasnt going, so I really had to manhandle it) Probably not the best way of going about it, but I was on my own in an unreachable area. I am sure someone is going to give you some real advice soon, but until then.....Why did you throw it into park???? Why not just pull the E-brake?

Actually, its parked on a slight incline, and was just being ornery. Now (an hour or so later) it shifts fine. Heres the issue, the battery is good, but when I have it in neutral or park, when i turn the key, I hear just one thing, a loud single click, not click click click, no revolution on the starter. I believe the inhibitor switch thinks its in gear, and wont allow it to turn. What do you guys think:? If i can figure this out, its the difference of me keeping it or donating it to habitat for humanity
thanksin advance, and thanks for the posts! |
gear selection linkage is adjusted incorrectly, this is my issue...

If i had pulled the emergency brake it would have locked up and slid into someone's parked car. That was not an option as any incidents or accidents would have cost me my job, as i drive for a living... I take full blame for this, but the power steering is also out, as well as really soft brakes, due to me using an aftermarket master....

Throwing the gear selector into park is NOT a good idea.
Hopefully its just your brake light switch. Here's an easy bypass: On the inside driver's side of the rear cargo door glass there are two metal clips. One goes to the Rear Defroster, the other for the Third Brake Light. Use a piece of wire or paper clip and jumper the two metal tabs. Sit in the drivers seat, press the Rear Defroster button, push down the brake pedal and try to shift. If you can shift your brake light switch is junk. If it doesn't then you'll want to check the shift interlock solenoid. When you press the brake pedal you should hear a sort of sliding click noise coming from the gear selector. This is the solenoid retracting the pin enabling you to shift. Do some searching for brake light switch and shift interlock. |
I can now slip it into all four gears. The issue is that all I hear is one loud click when trying to turn it over, the linkage may have well gotten stretched out when I did this. Its about the gear selection linkage is adjusted incorrectly, this is my issue., now I believe. Thanks for the info, but new information suggests a stretched out linkage, or cable. Im cool now, its not a duck dead in the water, and a local repair shop can tow it and adjust this linkage, I would attempt your fix, but the back end is full of my gear, i just drove 1400 miles to Bozeman, MT and the back door is practically unopenable. I cant unload until the 18th to get to this, until I get the keys to my new place. Right now, its stuck at a hotel up here. But It does shift, so its either the acutuator switch, or more likely a stretched out linkage

The brakes are really spongy right now. perhaps if I bleed the brakes, it will work? Or slide into neutral and park it into a level spot> taking the tension off the actuator cable?

So you wanted to 4x4 in the park and now you're stuck. Smh.

However, it sounds like your shifting problem is resolved. If your linkage was out of adjustment you wouldn't get a "click" at all, you'd get nothing when turning the key. That single "click" sounds like your starter is crapped out. Rip the heat shield off the starter and check ALL connections at the battery and starter. next whack the starter with a hammer and see if it starts. If it does DON'T turn it off. Drive it immediately to a place where it can be safely parked and you can replace the starter. The hammer trick usually only gets you 1-2 additional starts. |
