97 D1 Running rich, shifting late

Hey all, new to this forum. I just picked up a D1 with 160,000 on the clock but it has some issues. Like I said in the title it runs rich, exhaust smells like unburned fuel. It also seems a bit underpowered and shaky. I will plug in my code reader shortly and post those. As for the transmission, it won't shift into 3rd or 4th until nearing 4000 rpms. I already checked the fluid, so could a clogged filter cause late shifting for only half the gears?

Ok, four codes: P1314, two P1191s, and a P0399.

Running rich is usually bad O2's and or bad plugs and wires.
As for the trans not shifting, adjust the shift linkage.
I assume you already replaced the air filter.

Spike, the air filter was in terrible shape. I did my best to clean it out today but that made no difference; hopefully I can pick up a new one soon. The plugs and wires are from a D2 I've been parting out and they were basically new kingsbornes. So would you say the problem is down to 02 sensors? and could that cause the misfire code?

Replace the plugs.
O2's dont generally cause mis fires, unless its running way to rich and flooding out.

Ok, I can get new plugs tonight. Swapping the originals with the other set didn't change anything though so I'm not sure.

Okay, I bolted in some fresh Champions today and it didn't seem to make a difference.

Rent or buy a OBDII scanner that reads live data, check the running engine temp and make sure its not running to cold, if the ECU thinks the engine temp is -60 it will run really rich.
A bad coolant temp sensor will send a false temp to the computer.

Ok, I can check tomorrow if my scanner does that. If not I'll try to rent one or something.

AutoZone rents them.
