Anyone ever retro fit bulbs in fog lamps?
 

So both of the fogs on our 98 Discovery are out, looks like you have to buy the entire assembly every time a bulb goes out which to me is just plain old stupid. We have a junkyard nearby that has always has at least a few Land Rovers, $10 a fog lamp from them doesnt seem bad. The issue is that you cant really test them and every time one goes out we have to hope and pray we can find another.

Anyway I started thinking and alot of guys retro fit bulbs in headlamps, has anyone converted a D1 fog lamp to a bulb you can actually swap when it goes out?

Also we were considering maybe adding a set of lights to the brush guard instead if that would be easier. Can you run an aftermarket set of lights from the factory fog wiring? I love the look of the big lights on the brush guard but dont want to hack into the wiring or add any ugly switches. Considering the wiring and switch for the factory fogs is already where I need it, seems super easy to just tie into that.

Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure they use a standard H3 fog light bulb that you can get at any parts store.

Wish it were that easy, the D1's have a sealed housing with the bulb built in and no way to access it. Where most lamps would have a socket, this one just has two little wires that come out on the rear of the housing.

I replaced a bulb, remove two screws on the ends and halfs come apart

Seriously? I'm gonna take one off and give it a try. I didn't see a socket so I googled it and every post I found said to replace the whole assembly. I'll feel dumb if its that simple :)

You can replace the bulb itself without removing any screws. At least on my foglights, you could replace the bulb without any tools. Just like replacing a head light bulb.

Yup, according to Rovers North, it is a standard H3 bulb.

Well I got them figured out, the bulb is hiding between the two halves of the fog lamp housing, once you pull the mounting screws you can seperate the halves. All that trouble and the second I hit the switch with good bulbs in the fuse blows :(
