A/C compressor bypass. 96 Discovery.
 

Hi.
A/C doesn't work in my 96 Discovery,previous owner say it needs a recharge. I really couldn't care less about ac,power windows,door locks and all that fancy stuff so the question is,is there any info on removing and bypassing the compressor?

That is a good question. You can unplug the wire to the compressor, and it won't try to energize. I don't recall anyone posting about a $30 - $50 bypass pulley bracket (common for US pickup trucks). The serpantine route with a shorter belt might be hard for the tensioner to keep up with.

Whatever the solution I suspect there will be more interest in it as trucks get to the point where AC repair costs exceed truck value. Of course around me, AC is highly valued. We grew up with 260 AC, roll down two windows and go sixty...

I looked at my parts supplier, they list all the belts as "with AC", about 88 inch long.

perhaps a partz wizard will while away the afternoon seeing which ones would line up.....

Unless the AC compressor pulley is bad why not just leave it and not turn the air on?

ET solved this one - on a post from a while back - new belt, and new tensioner.

Everything is still intact,I may just leave it alone and have one of the techs here charge it just in case I sell it,everything will be working.

An older post I know but not trying to reinvent the wheel. ....
So, continuing on this theme for a semi-complete ac delete you can depressurize the system, and remove all ac hardliners from the firewall to the compressor, the compressor, the hardlines to the condenser, the condensor, and the electric fans, acquire and install the smaller belt and D2 tensioner, correct?
Any adverse effects to anything else in doing this?

Has anyone put the D2 pulley in? Any issues there.

I'm thinking how much it'd suck without ac in the rain of summer. Contemplating the uncomfortableness vs. not spending the bucks to redo what will be alot of parts and costliness vs. continuing my simplification agenda.
It's my DD right now but will be shifting to my hunting truck next year. So it's only one more year....
