Catalytic Converters

So after a trip to muffler man where they quoted me $1075 and said they wouldn't cut the old ones out and weld new ones in? Have those that replaced just the cats did you take the y-pipe off the truck and bring it somewhere or did they do it for you? Also are prices for used cats still pretty high?

I guess I don't know your state's regulations, but that sounds odd and the price sounds high unless it was in stainless. I'd look around for another muffler shop. Preferrably one on the south side of town. Be sure they use aluminized pipe for longevity, don't accept anything less. I've had two done not that long ago, one on a jeep Grand Cherokee, another on a cadillac. Hope it helps.

Which Muffler Man did you go to?
Grandville or Walker?

Pursan 11-16-2010 07:20 PM

Went to the one in Standale on Lake Michigan Dr. The service guy was trying to sell me on the oem y-pipe because of the "high performance high compression motor that would be restricted by welded in cats"

Roll of the floor and laugh out freaking loud that is funny.
Did you explain to the guy that our trucks has a compression ratio of 9:35-1? No wheres near high performance.

Are yours rattling?
You can buy the whole y-pipe with cats brand new for ~$600 and install it yourself.
Or you can go see Mike at Petey's Pitstop on Chicago Drive in Grandville, next to Grandville Tractor and behind Mel's Party Store.
Tell him I sent you. (Phil)
Tell him you just want universal cats welded in and see what price he quotes you.

Man i just ordered some universal Thunderbolt spun high flow obd2 cats 47 bucks a pop...having a shop install them for 100...my cats are rattling and threw a p0420 code or something (bad cat)

Pursan 11-16-2010 07:51 PM

Yeah the passenger side is toast, I'll try to get over there this week and get a price from him.
I could tell the service guy was trying to sell me that overpriced y-pipe and I'm sure some people would fall for it for their "high performance" engine but I was already in shock over their price for the pipe

I'm going to have mine cut out and a "test pipe" welded in before I "order" new ones.
I want to "confirm" 100% that mine are not working before I "replace" them.

Christmas is right around the corner and he needs to buy something for his wife and if just one sucker overpays for a y-pipe he can do it.

Glad you were not that sucker.
