Coolant Loss Question - Only Losing a Certain Amount
Hi all,
When I bought my Discovery new a few weeks ago I noticed that it was a little low on coolant, so I filled it to the fill mark. Drove around about a week and noticed that the level had dropped again. I figured head gasket leak, I filled it back up to full and drove around, found the loss again, but realized it seems to drop to the same point each time and not go down from there. I would say the coolant sits about 1-2 inches below the fill line. I have checked the reservoir for leaks and can't find any, so I'm a little confused why it keeps dropping to a certain level but holds that level.
Thanks!

It could be something hose related.
Ive had my share of coolant issues. I replaced water pump, a couple hoses, viscous fan, coolant tank cap, the thermostat, the original radiator and still I was getting a leak. I replaced the cylinder heads and changed the head gaskets. In the end it turned out to be the coolant reservoir that needed to be replaced. I drove it for over a month with no leaks (parked it under a large piece of cardboard). Oddly I added a bottle of water wetter up to the full line and damn, a small coolant puddle soon appeared on the cardboard. Add to that the newer radiator has a Winter leak due to the construction of its aluminum and plastic body!
Maybe you haven't seen much action on the gauge due to the colder weather and your thermostat not opening depending on how far/long your driving.
Some one with additional knowledge will soon chime in.

dealing with the same issue - loose only a certain amount of coolant - replaced entire coolant system except heat core and reservoir over the summer - all connections, rad and hoses look good - so I ordered the reservoir last week!
FYI - the rockauto tank is the same as the ones you get from ebay and other rover places that are after market - except on RA its $8.00. w/ shipping (about $17 total)
