Cost of new remote keyless FOB
 

Purchased a 1999 Discovery I SD with a manual key only. Anyone tell me the approx cost of a keyless remote fob and how to go about to obtain one? I'm assuming the dealer is the only place to get one.

Will they be able to program it for my SD and the alarm system?

You can find them on the forums pretty cheap. Think I payed 20 for 2. Pricey part is getting them programed. Dealer quoted 100 per remote. The Shop in Atlanta will do both for 50 but if have to drive down there. Any shop with a test book can do it.

Could you tell me what forum to look in? Is there a classified section?

EBay, of the classifieds here or on disco web. EBay would be your best bet for one immediately.

be sure on ebay you are getting the entire remote not just a replacement case

How do I determine the FCC ID code for my 1999 LAnd Rover Discovery SD?

I paid $43 for one on Ebay, and just used my new Hawkeye scantool to program it to the truck.

Piece of cake. Tell the scantool to do it, and it tells you to press the unlock button on each remote 16 times. At the 8th time of each, the horn toots. I think you can do up to 4 remotes.

I have a actron CP9580L, but I do not think it will program remotes. Is there maybe a key sequence I can do in the door or ignition that will allow me to program it in a 1999 SD?

GPR, when you purchased your FOB, did you need to make sure the FCC ID was correct, or just purchased based on the description for the item?

No, you need either a Black Box system, Hawkeye, or Testbook. The testbook is really only a dealer tool and costs thousands.

If you want to add a remote, you either have to visit a dealer, buy a Hawkeye or Black Box tool, or find someone who has one near enough to you to go visit with a six pack. There's no way to program one otherwise.

It also lets you set a number of options on the alarm, like horns, light and several options on immobilization from passive(no starter) and active (disable ECU) to none at all. This option is probably why some people here report that they've changed the ECU with no trouble, while other report they needed to use the matching alarm unit from the donor. It depends on the options selected on the alarm.

As far as the FCC id, it didn't change from 1996 all the way through the end of the Disco 1 production in mid 1999, so no, I didn't check.
