Diff lock stuck

So, first time Land Rover owner, and I've come across what seems to be a common issue-the transfer gearbox goes to neutral and low and back to high fine, but it won't go over to the left into the diff lock. There is so much resistance it acts like its stuck and not going to move anytime soon. I'm assuming it's because of not being used since the person that had it last had hello kitty duck tape over the sun roof (which I already sealed), I'm sure it didn't see much action off road. I kind of understand that I need to grease up the lever from the top, I sprayed from every angle under the car at the lever but it still didn't do anything. So today I opened up the transfer gearbox from the inside and got past the insulation piece but once I got to the rubber around the lever it had rivets and I'm not quite sure how to remove those. I'm guessing once I get past that I can get to where I need to grease it up? Any other advice on fixing this would be great. I want to get into off-roading but I'd like to have the diff lock working so I feel more assured that I won't get stuck.

Drill out the rivets.

Remove the plate. Most likely you will need to remove the shift assembly. Depending on year it will be 4 10mm bolts(or 13), then a 13mm nut on the bottom of the dif lock linkage, and then a clevis pin and clip attaching the hi lo linkage.

You will need to put it on a vice and soak in PB blaster or equivalent and probably need to use your fine adjustment tool( brass hammer works best). And beat on it.

Good luck

do what abran said. I just did this last week. sounds scarier than it is. i had mine unstuck and put back together in an hour and a half.

A year for your truck in your signature helps everyone answer questions more accurately.

If the above advise doesn't work you may have to remove/modify the safety switch down and to the right of the shifter. They are known for not letting the transfer case lever move properly. Might as well do it while your in there.

depends on where you live, but since OP can go H to L and back he is one step ahead. took me 2 hours of "lube, hammer, wiggle, repeat" to free up my linkage... and that was on a bench and in a vise. it wouldnt budge from high unlocked no matter what i tried. now it is smooth as silk.

not a hard job though.

04 D2 SE diff lock

Hi all,

reviving this thread. Im
unsure how to remove the diff lock shifter. The shifter is seized like in the posts above and I want to remove it to address that. I have popped out the rivets and now I can’t figure out how to remove the hardware holding the shifter to the high low and diff lock cables. Help if you can!
