Discovery I hood insulation.
 

Has anyone tried any of the JC Whitney generic hood insulation options for a Discovery.. Any other options? Original is too expensive and mine has been eaten by mice. Thanks, Mike

curious bout this as well. I know some run w/o the insulation but i imagine its there for a purpose

Purpose is keep in engine heat in winter, keep sun heat out in summer and keep engine heat from cooking paint off hood, mine was missing I got one from a u pull

Mine was shot so I tore it out. Paint shot anyway so I never really cared

It is NOT for insulation purposes, it is a fire suppression blanket.
In case of engine fire the plastic ties that hold it on melt, it falls onto the fire snuffing it.
Mine fell down, removed it, threw it away 2 years ago, no probs with anything.

Mine didn't have one (97), and I grabbed the one from a D2 at the boneyard. An engine fire.... glad I have full coverage... what's on Craigs List? I think it does help with sound a little.

It can have multiple purposes. If you want to deaden sound, look at Dynamat Xtreme and Hoodliner. For fire suppression, I'd go with a AFFF system instead. Summit sells a few different ones, and there's better systems if you're willing to pay. For heat insulation, it probably doesn't matter much unless you have custom paint. The 10+ year old paint is doubtfully worth dotting over at this point. Dynamat and Dynaliner/Hoodliner will work to protect custom paint. You can also consider ceramic coating the manifolds to reduce heat if it's really an issue.

Never heard the fire suppresion thing guess it might work for that, i used to notice the older trans ams with large decal missing the insulation did not like it could be a coincidence

Got rid of mine a few years ago. No probs.
