The Discovery lower radiator hose
can blow me.
What a horrible design to drain a radiator. I spent 2 hours pulling, twisting, anything to try and get the hose disconnected from the bottom of the radiator. Took to trying to pry it off with screwdrivers. No room to move, no way to get any leverage. Finally just cut the damned thing off. Sucks since the hose was only 2 years old. At least the radiator is out. Going to take it to a shop to see if they can find that tiny leak. |
While you have your rad at the shop , see if you can have a drain petcock bung installed to make the NEXT time a little easier. I had the same issue when I flushed mine and I swore that when I do pull my rad the I would have a bung installed.

Cheaper to buy an aluminum rad off ebay, direct fit with drain

Tom do you have a link to one of those or an ebay seller? I'm poking through and don't see any with the drain petcock.
Thanks! |
Something like this is what I have I need to look but iirc there is a drain, personally I pull that little plug on top, drop in a clear hose and syphin it into jugs, much faster, no mess

Thanks. Good tip about the siphon too!

Yep, siphon the radiator down. You can get nearly everything out this way.
Grab the lower hose and twist it to break it loose. If that doesn't work use a right angle pick to work between the hose and port. You really have to just manhandle it. Pick and Hook Set 7 Pc |
Another option> If you heat the hose with a hair dryer it breaks free easily. I've never had it not work on any coolant hose.

Looked at mine no drain, syphin is fast

As I'm doing my research on these I'm seeing some with the lower radiator hose connector bolted into place with two bolts, and some where it is molded. My old one was molded.
Anyone running the ones bolted into place? Seems like it would be a point of failure OR a better way to drain it without wrestling with the hose. I'm thinking more that it's a point of failure.... Thoughts? |
