Drivetrain Noise

Hello

I have a disco 1 with 150K and recently have developed some drivetrain noise. It sounds much like a bad "throw out bearing" on a stick shift. It's almost a grnding sound but not quite as bad. The noise fully develops around 30mph and when I back off the accelerator the noise goes away and when I feather the throttle it returns. Seems to be getting worse.

There is no vibration so I don't think it is a bad union.

Any help would be greatly appreicated.

Thanks

Have you checked all the fluid levels?

Better yet, drain and refill the transfer case and the front and rear differentials unless you already have.

Yes I changed all the diffs, hubs and transfer case, greased the unions and splines.

Any other thoughts?

Let someone else drive while you hang underneath at 30 mph.

I have heard of the input shaft bearing on the transfer case going out on these before.... Does it make the noise all the time? Or at different speeds?

I agree, pull and inspect the front flange for wear/bearing noise as well as see if it wobbles.

Heres an update. Today I was driving and the grinding noise ended with a very high pitched squeal that lasted for about 15 seconds. Then no drivetrain noise at all. Later in the day I could smell something like burning rubber so I inspected the car and nothing to be found The smell continued through the day. There had been no noise or any sign of a problem except for the smell of burning rubber. Later today the transmission started acting up and got stuck in 1st or 2nd. I made it home and the car did change into 3 or 4th but after fooling with the shifter and throttle.

Has the tranny gone? What about the trans filter etc? the car is hot so I'm going to wait and check fluid when cold etc.

Any ideas? Your help is greatly apprecicated.

Spike that was funny! Sorry about your truck man. Have you checked the fluid level in the tranny prior to the meltdown today? If so what did it look like/smell like?
