Driving with no Y-pipe?
 

If I take the y-pipe off, will the engine run well enough to drive a short distance?

If yes, how far, and can I do this without baking stuff in the engine bay?

It will probably run, albeit horribly. And impressively loudly. And you'll probably get pulled over for the noise.

If you're really dead set on doing this, I would keep the windows down if I were you. CO poisoning and whatnot...

Backstory: Taking out the y-pipe to weld onto it (previous owner cut original flange off and ghetto welded the pipe to muffler) to make muffler install easier.

I cant weld at my house but can at SIL's house a few miles away. Fitting the pipe and welding supplies into my Stratus doesnt seem fun. If I gotta figuer a way to do that though I guess I will.

It would probably make more sense to to the disassembly and reassembly there. And even more sense to do it on the truck altogether to ensure that everything fits in place properly.

To be completely honest, I would just take it to an exhaust shop, where they could probably fix you up for less than a Benjamin.

It does. However, first manifold nut I tried to take off broke the stud. So, figuring they would all break, I would have to leave it there until I finished the job and could figure out how to remedy the broken studs. I cant leave it there that long :)

Thats why I am welding new flange sections to the y-pipe and the new muffler. This way I can fit and tack the rear pipe to the muffler, then easily remove from the y-pipe/vehicle and finish the weld.

True, but they would probably just use clamps and/or do another half-assed weld job. Also, I have to replace my o2s and they are stuck in there making it very difficult to do with the pipe on the truck.

Basically what this guy did, minus the cat stuff and adding me welding those new flange connectors on.

Do you mean running with only the manifolds? Don't forget about the flames that may be shooting out of the manifolds while the engine is running. Shouldn't be as bad as an old carburated engine but I think you may cook some important bits on the trip. How about a trailer?

R.e. flames - Haha, yeah that kinda potential catastrophe is exactly the kinda thing I was wondering about.

Ill just take it off at home and try to stuff it in the stratus.
