Fuel capacity for D1
 

I have a UK spec DI built for the Middle East market. Everything I can find shows this has a 23.4 gal/89 liter gas tank. However the most gas I've ever been able to put in it is 65 liters and that was when I coasted into the gas station on fumes. I've recently replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter.

I live in the Middle East and purchased the fuel pump from the states. When I took it to the garage to have it installed the mechanic told me the fuel pump was too big and he had to exchange it at a parts store for the correct pump. The one I bought was too big in circumference.

Does anyone know if the D1 was made with another size fuel tank? Also with the old and new fuel pump, I can't go much below a quarter of a tank before I start getting indications of fuel starvation. Thanks for any info you may have.

Here's a page from LR on the various fuel pumps, looks like there were some variations. As for capacity, I did not find that. Could also be messed up float sensor, or differences in ethanol mix in gas (we suffer that here in the States, and it has a different specific gravity, so gas gauges read different based on the ethanol content, or if we have snuck in some "marine gas" - sold without ethanol becuase it is a serious problem for winterizing expensive outboard engines). And here's the new US standard for the fuel gauge....

The only way you will know for sure is to run it until it quits and then fill it up.
And no, one sized fuel tank for all markets.
I just had a thought, maybe your fuel tank was replaced with a non LR fuel tank?
There was a recall on the DI fuel tanks because they cracked, maybe the fuel tank was replaced but not by the dealer under the recall?

Spike55, my 96 D1 will only hold 16 US gallons. Any thing over 16 gallons overflows from the tank. I don't know the past history of my truck as I bought it used. Are there markings on the tank that would indicate an OEM tank? I have replaced the fuel pump but it overflowed at 15 gallons before the pump change too?

It should be stamped Land Rover on the bottom of the tank.
Are you 100% sure you are on empty?
Just because the gauge says empty does not mean you actually are.

I was definitely empty even though the gauge showed just less then 1/4 tank. Based on all the comments I think I have an after market tank which would explain why my fuel gauge never shows completely full or empty and why the fuel pump, gasket and retainer nut (?) didn't fit. Thanks for all your comments. I'll have to continue to fill up at the 1/4 tank mark.

Spike, oh when the gas gauge is on empty and the light comes on, I have just a few miles until I am walking. I will check the tank for markings and let you know. Thanks!

When you get low, carry a gas can with fuel. When you run out, add the spare can, then motor to the gas pump and top off. Simple math.

My owners manual says my tank's usable capacity is 23.4 US gals/89.0 litre (approximate for use as guide only).
