Default Fuel Pump May Have Just Gone

Coming home from the hardware store with the kids, turned a corner into my hood and the engine died. I pulled over, restarted it, and it ran until I got to the next corner. Fortunately, it was at the top of a hill, and my house is at the bottom.

After coasting into the driveway, I tried to restart it and it would immediately die. It behaves like it's out of fuel, but there is 1/4 tank, so that isn't the issue.

My first thought is FUEL PUMP!! Grr....

I guess I know what I am doing for the rest of the day.

Default Seriously?

With seeing what you have done in other posts <-- I think it should probably read, "I know what I will be doing for the next 30 minutes."

Perhaps you are correct.

I got my wife to start it while I listened to the pump. I didn't really hear anything, but the truck suddenly decided it wanted to run, albeit roughly.

While it was idling roughly, I tapped firmly on the top of the pump and the idle smoothed out like normal. It ran fine for a minute and then began idling rough again. So, I tapped the pump and the idle improved. I will clean up the connections to see if that helps, but besides a little dust they look fine.

I'm thinking it is the pump.

I have the AEL Disco (1997).

Anyone have a recommendation for a good and inexpensive replacement?

Cheers.

Default Pump ONLY

If you are willing to change the pump and "pump sock" only, the Airtex PM 3720 - I used works for yours too. (According to others)
You will need a 8" piece of 5/16" fuel injector hose (and 2 clamps)to connect the pump to the top of the housing - but still a very quick project for well under $100. Just make sure you get the in tank filter to attach to the pump for another $8 or so.

It took me 2 hours, but I had to deal with rusty screws and a LOT of apprehension as I had never done it before.

Good Luck!

Autozone wants more than $500.

How about this one?:

The proline is $399 from Rovers North.

Having AEL makes it more expensive.

Confirmed that the Airtex will work for pre AND AEL set-ups, but it is just a pump replacement. ($78 at Advance Auto)

Given your symptoms, it may be a harness ground issue as it works when you hammer on it...

Where is the harness ground?

It might be that, but it has been 100% fine until today, which makes me suspect the pump is going out. I could be wrong of course.
