Heater Help (w/ pic)

I need to work on getting my heater blowing hot. Cold weather is near.
The A/C works, and blows pretty damn cold actually. The heater blows, just not hot, or even warm. Looking under the hood, I see one hose and one opening from the firewall, which I get the feeling should hook up somewhere rather than dead ending. I've circled em in the pic. Any suggestions??

On my 97 there is a nipple at the front of the engine on the pass side that hooks up to a set of metal tubes your hose and hose end should be routed through,

i do not see the set in your pic they may have been removed at some point due to leaking. can you get a picture of the front half of your engine on that same side?

On the 98 d1 there is a hose coming off each heater core nipple, they then hook to metal tubes, one tube bends 90* and hooks to the intake with a Special short 2" long hose with different dia each end.

The other metal tube goes to front of engine bends90* down behind alt and a/c compressor and hooks into lower Rad hose

Iirc the early d1 are run different could be wrong

The hose in the pic with your hand on it, bet your heater hooks into the 2 pipes it is connecting

General picture of coolant flow..... all this can be found in the workshop manual known as RAVE around here.

Thanks. I looked through the manual but I must've overlooked that diagram. Guess I was looking for something more Heater specific.

Here's a pic showing where that hose is connected. Looks like the PO bypassed the heating sytem. Worries me why they would've done that. Leaks maybe?

Sux but the heater core is leaking.

On a side note.... the center EVAP hose that is on the side of the plenum looks cracked and missing a clamp. This at least will be an easy fix.

Not too many other reasons to bypass the heater core.

So I need to replace the heater core and replace the one hose. From what I hear this job is a PIA.

It is not 100% certain the heater core is leaking. Best thing to do is plumb the hoses correctly and find out. If the heater core leaks you'll know in short order. At that point you can always pull the hoses and revert to your current state of affairs.

Yes, the heater core is DEEP in the dash and a PITA to replace.
