Know I looked on a website, forgot which one though. It says "hub nut tool" fits discovery, series, and defender. The one I bought is a 2 1/16" for sure.

Got all the tools/parts in and going to start the work on this suspension, brake lines, rotor/pads and radius arm bushings. I hope it goes smooth. I have rebuilt front knuckles on 69 FJ40 before and that was pain and messy. I hope that this is easier. wish me luck

I will take before/after pics of everything

Default spindle question

Ok got it all removed and starting to clean things up and reassemble. Should I be concerned about the rust/burn mark on the spindle? see the photos that I attached. how would I clean that up? some steel wool?

Steel wool or emery cloth if available.

Chris-Bob,
Thanks I knew I am not suppose to leave it like that. I will clean it up tomorrow. I will go get some emery cloth from napa tomorrow and some lint free or very little lint paper clothes to get the spindle clean

I know you are already into the job but I picked up the Landroverworkshopdvd.com axle dvd and can say it would make the entire process make a lot more sense watching all the work being done with decent narration by the tech. Plus its always enjoyable watching a video like this with British terminology and accents. lol

Good luck.

If you're using emery cloth, be carefull not to remove too much. Where that rust spot is is where the bearing rides, and it's supposed to be a snug fit.

The rear end is completed. Was not sure how to get 62nM of torque on the hub nut but I tried the best I could without a socket big enough for the hub nut. I used the hub nut socket from atlantic british. Rave said 62 nM then back off 90 degrees and then re torque to 4nM.

But the lift is so big that it looks like I am going to have to release air from tires so I can get it out of the garage though. The front end sort of scares me though and looks a lot harder then the rear end.

I think the biggest concern is the following from the rave manual

20. To check drive shaft end play mount a dial
gauge using bracket LRT-99-503 and rest pin in
a loaded condition on end of drive shaft.
21. Fit a suitable bolt to threaded end of drive shaft.
Move drive shaft in and out noting dial gauge
reading. End play should be between 0,08 to
0,25 mm.

That measurement would be adjusted by adding/removing shims between the snap ring and drive member on the front axleshaft where it goes through the drive member.

That does not require re-setting when the front end is dissasembled, use the same shims(they look like washers) when you put it back together and it will go right back to where it was.

That proceedure is for if you replace the stub axle and/or the thrust washer that goes on it.
