Losing power at high speeds

Just bought a '97 Disco I from a friend. Absolutely love it!!! However, on the highway going about 70mph it will randomly loose power. I don't know how to discribe it except that I can hear and feel it loose power and then it goes right back to normal. I looked for previous post to find the solution, but couldn't find any. Please help! Greatly appreciated!! - Paul

First thought is VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is failing. Are you getting any codes?

No, sir. I'm not getting any codes. Thank you for your reply! I'll check into it.

I would go along with the VSS also, also dirty fuel filter.

Wow! You guys are awesome! Thanks for the quick replies.

Power loss....

This was the first issue that I had that ultimately led to a fuel pump replacement. However, I "ignored" it for about 3 weeks, and replaced the fuel filter at the same time as the pump.
Hindsight and all that - I would listen to Disco Mike and start with the filter.

My problem is high RPM (2500-3000) at 70mph, what can be wrong?
Check RAVE again, there is no serviceable fuel filter for D2, so change fuel filter is not an option.

power

Your filter "sock" is attached to the pump, in the tank. As for what specifically is causing it - I'm at a loss as well.
For $90 you can get the Airtex replacement, with the sock and swap it out (30 minute job MAX) to see if that's the issue.
That is what I ended up doing and it corrected my issue.
Or the VSS route. At this point, with no codes or additional information...there really isn't much else I can think of.

Of course, others may say that 70 is only for passing :-)

Hope you figure it out!

Could you perhaps be hitting the rev limiter....Just a thought.

You need to post your question over in the DII section.
All DI's have a replaceable fuel filter.
