Low ratio does not engage and give me drive

My disco can move into low and I can feel the click but it doesn't actually give me any drive. Can anybody give tips or tell what's wrong

Mine kind of does that sometimes. The action of the lever can get sticky and not move very well from lack of use, preventing it from going *fully* into gear (gears aren't meshing). That's the first thing that comes to mind. Some spray lube on the linkages and possibly the shift mechanism (from below) might help out a lot.

similar to above, try some lube and work the lever back and forth. Mine didnt work at all when I first got the truck but now works perfect. I also fine mine only engages well when I give the driveline some slack (if i was initially driving forward, I put it in the reverse and just barely creep back a mm or 2 and you can hear the gears unbind, then throw it in neutral and it shifts and engages perfect and I can drive off)

So, you probably only shifted to N, not L. The manual spells out two methods and a few tips for Manual or Automatic vehicles. Sorry about the photo orientation. The main thing is the gears should move easily when everything is lined up right.

Owner's Manual 96 Disco, how to shift to Low or Diff Lock

Discotime1 08-29-2022 12:35 AM

there is a solenoid on the top of the transfer case that locks you out of low range unless the auto box is in nuetral. when it fails you are permentely locked out of low range until you either replace the solenoid or do what me and alot of others have done and removed it entirely from the system. its a round cap on top the the t-case i believe its accessible by removing the center console.
