Offroading In 4X4 Low not diff locked
Is ok to lightly offroad in the standard operation of 4 low unlocked?
Or should you always use diff lock when off road? Brian |
It's totally fine to leave the diff unlocked for some light wheeling. It's actually probably better that way. Leaving the diff unlocked is probably nicer to the tcase. If it were me, I'd ONLY engage the diff lock if I was starting to or just about to have a difficult time in low range unlocked.

perfectly fine. most D2's don't even have a diff lock. just high and low on mine.

If I'm in lo I'm locked.
But yes, you are fine. |

If you are off road you should always lock your CDL. The Rover Center Diffs are very strong but only when they are locked. When you have wheelspin from your adventures off-road and your CDL is not locked you run the risk of blowing up the spider gears in the differential.
The only reason I can think of unlocking the CDL off-road is to make a tight turn |
If you have to wonder if you need your CDL locked or in low, you don't.

my '03 doesn't have a diff lock. i am installing an '04's.
either way, half, over half, most, even if it's there it can't be engaged unless you add linkage to it. if you can't activate it, it's basically not there. |
