You will need a boxed end wrench to fit it.
The engine takes 7 quarts of oil.

Sorry thread. I need to changer oil. Do I need short or longer filter. Thinking about the k&n and add some Marvel mystery oil.

You can run a variety of filters, including the one you mention, the NAPA gold series, the Mobile 1, and even the WIX 51459 that adds about another quart to the system. Main thing is change them and the oil often, don't try that once a year stuff, every 25,000 even if it don't need it, etc.

MMO is about 7 weight oil kinda like a solvent or a drive while flush product. MAy help get some sludge out. What seems to work very well for these engines (designed in the dark ages) is diesel rated oil, which has more chemicals for cleaning (good for previous owner induced goop), and keeps particles in suspension longer so filter can trap them. Diesels have that to help with soot in the oil. Shell Rotella will actualy do a good slow job of cleaning engine gunk. Cheap and easy to find. What ever you use, make it "X" W40, you really don't want to use 30 weight in these trucks.

I'm not every mechanical but I have changed the oil in my Cherokee. Can I do this?

Yes, gravity works well on both trucks. If you have a pair of ramps, you can put both on passenger side and that gets the oil drain headed down for a little extra drip out.

There may be a washer that comes off with that big nut, you can flip it over and re-use, it is a crush washer. You can also buy new ones. Regular oil filter wrench. Pour oil in new filter and install, pour balance of oil in the truck.

Crank truck and oil warning light should go out in a few seconds. Like 3 - 5 seconds. Turn off, re-check fluid level after a few minutes. While at it check all other fluids under the hood (when engine is cold), this should be a weekly ritual.

Look at oil in the pan you drained it into. Should look like used oil. Not milky, or with green dropletes of fresh coolant.

Oil choice should be something that ends in the number 40, like 5W40, 15W40, etc.

changed the oil. pretty easy hardest part was not to spill it all over. i used an K&N and 15w40 rotella. I also added some MMO.

Great job. Now you are ready for some more messy jobs, like service to swivels, differentials, transfer case, lube all the ball joints, and drive shafts in multiple places. If shaft does not have grease fitting on universals they need to be updated. Write up in tech section. If you come out clean, you missed something. i read the end all thread after i bought the filter, but i return the oil i got at costco and bought the rottella. next time ill get the one they were talking about. i want to change the diffs next. is there a tech write up?

There is a reason we have a tech section.
