P1313/1316...what to try next?
 

Truck started running rough yesterday and threw codes P1313 and P1316. After looking through some of the previous posts I tried the following:
- Changed plugs & wires
- Cleaned MAF sensor
- Seafoam through the intake
- Made sure all vacuum line ports were clean
- Brake cleaner around vacuum ports & lines to make sure there wasn't a leak
- Swapped front & rear 02 sensors on drivers side since this was the side of the misfire code, figured this would eliminate 02 sensor since front is the only one that adjusts fuel (assuming the rear one is good)
- Tapped on the cats to make sure there wasn't anything rattling around in there, they seemed okay

I also pulled the following from my scanner when the codes tripped:
STFT B1(%): 3.9
LTFT B1(%): 1.5
STFT B2(%): -12.5
LTFT B2(%): 1.5
Eng RPM: 1396
Coolant Temp: 80 F

Didn't write down the load but it was around 40%

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go from here? Engine still has the same slight tick that it always has, hoping its not a stuck valve thats finally done some damage :(

Have you checked your fuel pressure? I've seen some discussion about bad fuel pumps causing these codes.

I haven't checked that but it seems to be running too rich (at least from what my nose tells me), regardless I'll head over to autozone tomorrow to check the fuel pressure.

The thing that has me confused is the differences in short term fuel compensation from bank A to bank B, seems like they should be relatively the same. I think I'll try swapping left and right front 02 sensors to see if it makes the problem change sides...

Perhaps the injectors need cleaning.

Fuel smell is your clue that it's over fueling. So you have an injector either broken, sticking or stuck open and the ECM cannot compensate for it. A fuel pressure leak down test would be the normal check for this. To find which injector is at fault simply remove spark plugs to see which one is wet. Further confirmation would be to remove the faulty injector and shake it. You should hear and feel a rattle, if not it's stuck.

Was your foot on the gas pedal when you pulled the codes?

Nope thats just the data I got from the freeze frame when the code was triggered.

Did a leak down test, fuel pressure was at 32 psi when running and stayed there when I shut her off so its not an injector stuck open. Also none of the old plugs seemed wet, they seemed pretty evenly wore out.

I checked the compression today:

1- 155 2- 180
3- 160 4- 165
5- 140 6- 140
7- 155 8- 170

Looks like cylinders 5 & 6 are below what they should be, maybe its time to pull the heads and see what going on in there...

1313 indicates Bank A's cat is or has failed.
1316 intake an emissions misfire.
Your compression numbers are not very uniform, shouldn't be more then 10% difference between them. Might want to run a can of BG's 109 thru to free up the rings or you could have some early valve wear which could also cause the detected misfire.

So it finally warmed up enough to dust off the land rover and go to work. I pulled the heads off today and found a significant amount of oil leaking into cylinders 7 & 8, and oil underneath the head gaskets on the inner/upper side (towards the valley). Also there seemed to be an excessive amount of oil in the intake when I pulled the plenum off, not sure if this is normal or not. There wasn't any coolant leaking into it and the coolant level was at the same amount that it was when I parked it 4 months ago.

Now I have to find a machine shop around here and order the gaskets. I'll let you guys know how it turns out in case anyone else has the same problem later on.
