Power steering pump replacement help please!
Hello everyone I this is my first time posting here but have been reading for some time and first want to say you are all very helpful. Hopefully someone can give me some advice on replacing my power steering pump. I can’t seem to get a good grip on the bolt on the left side of the pump with any tools I own. There is just no room to get a socket on it. (See pictures) Any help will be much appreciated. Have you tried a wrench instead of a socket

Use a line wrench, have the other two already removed so you can pull the unit with the last bolt. It has a thread locker on it, you just need to break it free of that and then you can use an open end wrench to turn it the rest of the way until you can get your left hand grippers (fingers) on it. Most auto/hardware stores carry line wrenches.

Also an offset box wrench works wonders.

Box wrench unless it is very thin won’t fit between pump and bracket nor can you pluck it off bolt head to turn it, hence line wrench. Been there, done that. It’s a PITA. |

You're replacing the power steering pump, right? Take off the pulley, you're going to have to do that sooner or later. It's held on with three 10mm bolts. Remove the cover that conceals the two bolts that secure the pump to the back of the enclosure. With those bolts out you can pull the power steering pump forward and out of the way. You don't really need to remove the power steering pump enclosure to do the job.

I looked back at your photos. You've already removed most of the bolts necessary to do the replacement. Now, you're creating more work for yourself. With the pulley off the pump you can see the two bolts all the way in the back of the enclosure that hold the pump in place. Take them out and the pump will come forward. You can then remove the two lines going into the pump and replace the faulty pump. Bolt the new one back in place and you're on your way.

I did this on my other 95 about 8 years ago to replace the internal gasket, (have not had a problem since)...am rebuilding another 95 and was killing myself trying to get those damn bolts out.....kept thinking I don't remember it being this hard...thought I better go back to the forum and sure enough...thanks once again Grant....

For V8i engines: I’m replacing my steering pump now and ran into the same issue. The RAVE manual is a little off with its order of operations here. Whether you are trying to replace just the steering pump or if you need to remove the steering pump housing, the bolt mentioned above (step 10 in RAVE manual) should NOT be removed before removing the steering pump itself Once you remove the steering pump the bolt mentioned above (step 10 in RAVE manual) is completely exposed and you can proceed to remove the steering pump housing with any kind of wrench or socket wrench. 1. Remove steering pump pulley and belt (see manual) 2. Remove all the bolts that hold the cover plate to the steering pump and steering pump housing 3. Once the plate is off, there will be 2 bolts within the housing (you will need a 10mm socket and a socket extension) 4. Once the two bolts have been removed the steering pump will come out of the housing exposing the tricky bolt mentioned above. |
