Default remote keyless entry

My father-in-law didnt have the remote fob for the 96 disco that i just got. I've found a couple used ones on ebay but will I be able to program it myself or do I have to take it to the factory. I found some info on a website about turning the ignition on,off then locking and unlocking the door then ignition on and off again to enter programming mode but I wanted to make sure that was correct.
Thanks all.

Actually, i found the instructions in the discovery workshop manual but part of the instructions is to depress the bonnet switch.
What the heck is a "bonnet switch"?

The bonnet is the hood. It is a switch that tells the ecu that the bonnet(hood) is open/closed.

Thank you. I guess I gotta figure out where the bonnet switch is now unless someone happens to know off the top of their head.

It's a little plunger on the passenger side.

Best thing you can do is unplug it. If battery goes dead while alarm armed, causes all kinds of problems when you try to jump it off. Getting into a locked hood is very difficult, I'll take the risk that some one wants my 2 year old battery vs immobilzation at the wrong time.

I never could get it to enter program mode, the bonnet switch may be bad i guess. I quit trying.
Good luck.

Best way to treat one of those key fobs is to place it i a vice and tighten securely, if a vice is unavaiable (like in Spike's case with no workbench) then place it on a flat surface and strike firmly with a large hammer.

Repeat if needed!
