Got the answer
This replacement remote must be programmed electronically to function with the vehicle.
This programming can be done by your local Land Rover dealer or an independent shop with key coding diagnostic equipment for Land Rovers

Mine was touchy with the unlock button even after a battery change, so I did away with it. Using the key in the door will still lock it and set the basic perimeteric alarm as the blinkers do flash 3 times to show the alarm is on.
As many horror stories as I have seen regarding alarm immobilization issues, I prefer to avoid that as much a possible. To me a spare key is more important, especially if you only have one. I have seen them break off in the ignition and if you only have one, that is a major situation.
Some people do prefer to have a key fob for convience. I don't care for them on mine.
