I've been contemplating messing with the alarm system here soon. My fob doesn't work, so I'd rather switch to a new alarm system with remote start.

This has been discussed. You might want to search it. if I recall/understand right, they say it is not possible due to a specific code that must be sent to engine ECU from alarm ECU. An aftermarket alarm wont have that code and/or not have ability to send it.

I'm dealing with this alarm mess on a 97 xd right now. I'll keep researching online and in the vehicle. If I come up with anything other than cramming a 302 in this thing I'll let you know.

I'm in a Disco II but how different can it be? The alarm is disabled when you turn the key, even if it is going off, unless it is superlocked. All that is necessary is to unlock the driver side door or hit the unlock button on the dash. I have disarmed mine by turning the lock mechanism with a screwdriver when I was working on the door lock and locked myself out of truck. So an aftermarket alarm works by simply doing its diligence with the remote signal and unlocking the doors.

I agree that the BCU has to send an unlock/disarmed signal to the ECU. In most makes you can get the ECU reprogrammed for stand alone mode (no BCU) but for Discos I assume that is by done by one person in the world and he doesn't have Internet or a phone.

I found this tip on the net, anyone try this
Find the BLUE / GREEN (-) wire located at the Factory Security Module:
the FACTORY SECURITY Module is located under the PASSENGER hush panel far to the right. Requires (2) 7mm bolts removed to access.Connect one end of a piece of wire to the BLUE / GREEN (-) wire
Connect the other end of the piece of wire to Ground - (chassis)
This will Dis-Arm the Factory Alarm, until the wire is removed
Im assuming attach to the alarm module side.....?????
