Road Trip 2018: 1995 D1: 3,900 Miles

Mission Complete, Earlier this summer, i decided to take my family from Kansas to Pennsylvania to Texas and back to Kansas to visit family and drop off my oldest with the Army. Over the last three weeks, I drove 3,900 miles through rain and heat at 70 mph- five days behind the wheel. Im pleased to report that besides the A/C condenser drain tubes blocking up, i had no significant issues; and even that is minor. I parked on an incline in San Antonio and the condensation began draining from the front of the rear tire well.

Since i'd only acquired the truck in March, it was a good chance to get to know her. I learned that the vehicle handles MUCH better with 60 psi tire pressure than at 70 psi. I learned that it takes more than one time to get the cooling system filled. i learned to follow the "pump 4 times and hold 1/4" method when she's warm. I learned that although it will do 75, any hill bigger than ant sized will dramatically reduce cruising speed. I learned that with the A/C on i get 12 MPG. I learned that many people love Discos and regret selling theirs.

On the route, i saw 4 other Discos, the first was in Cincinnati- it was dead on the side of the road with no driver. A very bad omen, i thought at the time. The second one in Columbus, OH- black. The third was a beautiful orange truck in Houston heading south on HWY 288 and the last was a really nice green, driving east on HWY 71 near Bastrop, TX

The backseat is trashed by my two young children and i witnessed a small disagreement between my spare up on the roof rack and a very low ceiling in a parking garage in Austin, My floorboards are still wet from the drive (i tried to clear them, but to no avail), and the oil needs changing after only 3 weeks, but all in all, very memorable.

Congratulations! You're now a member of the Disco tribe. The miles are noteworthy as trips go and especially in a dizzy fired Disco!

Congrats. Sounds like a great trip and I'm impressed. I do not have the confidence in mine to undertake a trip of that magnitude just yet however each day I get closer. You definitely earned your stripes on that one. Great truck.
