Steering thrashing at 40+ MPH Found bad bushing. How Difficult to replac?
Guys,
Found our steering went bad after I drove over a few bad bumps and a few other things..
Had someone wiggle the steering.
I looked under and found that this bushing is bad.
Where to find it?
What is it called?
How hard to replace?
I need to get this replaced ASAP as our 1997 D1 belongs to the W and she is mad about the Discovery I being bad.
Every time it goes bad for any reason - it is heard in my ear "new car time"
or "This Discovery is Junk"..
Painful thing is trying to find parts for this and fast.
Here is a picture.
The bolt where the vertical and horizonal meet will vibrate back and forth when the steering is wiggled fast back and forth.

Boy, a new bushing only lasting a few months stinks. I was going to comment on the potential damage done by the fluid that's leaking onto it, but it couldn't have done enough damage in a few months to ruin the bushing.
Have you checked the torque setting yet? Maybe someone didn't tighten it enough after installing the new bushing.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
Yeah, there is oil all over it from somewhere.
I bet that garage put in some made in China bushing or some such..
I think what buggered it was me driving up curbs onto sidewalks and back off.
That should not hurt a rover but in my case....
Sometimes I will drive up onto the sidewalk to park and then back off.
Well, it is a Rover.

If it gets a little out of alignment, all you need to do is have someone turn the steering wheel a little to shift the axle back to where it needs to be in order to reinstall the panhard rod.
