Steering wheel shake
 

Hey guys, My 99 Disco I has a steering wheel shake around 67-74 mph. Wheel shakes pretty bad. It's been doing it for a while and I thought it was my tires and balance. Well I replaced all 4 tires and balanced. Still there. Now before this started I noticed I have what looks like grease on my drivers side front rim being spattered out on them. Related? Now doing a search I keep coming up with the part "swivel pin bearings" and "swivel pin preload". Where do I look for this part? Mechanically inclined I am if guided a little, as I have swapped out the trans in my Disco. Oh yes also replaced front u joints. any info is appreciated. thanks

I'm not a master mech by any means but mine had the same problem when getting up to interstate speeds. I replaced my front shocks and the shaking ceased.

It would be worth an inspection at least.

Four things it may also be, in no particular order: wheel bearings,either worn or loose; bushings(panhard rod or control arm); swivel pin/bearing; steering rod ends

I would jack a front wheel up and see if the wheel is tight or if you can get movement while pushing/pulling top and bottom and side to side.

If it does have wiggle to it, see if its coming from loose/worn rod ends.

If the rod ends are tight, have someone press the brake pedal while the tire is still off the ground. Grab it at the 12 and 6 o'clock, try and move it.

If it still moves with the brakes on, it is the swivel bearing/pre-load. If it does not have any play to it with the brakes on, it is either the wheel bearings or stub axles(or both)

If the front wheels are solid from the get go, bushings would be my guess.

or your tires could be unbalanced

Swivel pin preload usually shows up when you hit a bump or uneven surface, and goes away when you apply the brakes or slow down. It's the type of shake people mistakenly "fix" by replacing their steering damper.
If yours isn't doing that, then more than likely it's tires, bushings, hub bearings or tie rod ends.

thanks for the tips, especially jacking it up and checking like that. New tires and just balanced. Antichrist, thanks for that tip, I think it did that once and it went away when I hit the brakes. I will see if I can make it do it again.
