strong smell of gas from hood and exhaust

just replaced fuel pump (from atlantic british) on my 1996 5 spd and i have a very strong smell coming from the exhaust and driver side of of the hood it kind of smells like gas but im not sure it doesnt smell very nice though the rover does not get driven very often couple miles every 3 days if not less (i know its temporary) there is also a ticking or slight knocking coming from the somewhere in the engine bay is this normal because of the lack of runtime or something that needs to be addressed im still working on the tail light all help is appreciated

You could have a fuel leak, you could be flooding out and thats the gas you smell.
If it is coming from the tail pipe (the smell) as well as the engine bay then I would say it si flooding for some reason.

Did your truck ever get the fuel tank replacement recall performed on it.
I wouldn't drive it till you find the leak, D1's melt into a big glob when they catch fire.

im not sure, i cant seem to find info on that recall is there a certain vin number that was affected?

Call your local dealer with your VIN and see if there are any open recalls.

In the meantime, find the smell. It could be rich exhaust and the knock could be an exhaust leak. Take it to a shop and have them check it. Most muffler places will inspect your exhaust for free...

I had to replace my fuel lines from the tank to the fuel rail and back due to extreme corrosion, I would get under it and look it over very good.

Or make sure insurance is current and ...........................light a match.................
