Transfer box will not go into gear
Hey guys, I just installed a used transfer case and it appears to be stuck in neutral. It will switch side to side locking the diff but will not switch to high or low. Any ideas before I set fire to it?
BTW it's a 95 |
They often become stiff from under or no use. Lots of WD-40 and brute force usually loosens them up. Have yet to replace one though, so I have no idea if there's a common problem to look for with the linkage. Did you verify that everything was good before you installed it?

Where would I actually spray the lube? I’m going to break the lever off if I try any harder.
There is a banjo bolt in the top of this thing with a tube coming off. Is that for lube or is it a vent? If it is a vent can I inject lube in there? You think I could removethis from my old X-case and install it on the new one? Would that help? 3. High-low ratio crossshaft assembly Attachment 41005 |

No, I still have the access plate out so when it wouldn't go into gear I pulled that one linkage rod off and I still couldn't get it to shift with a wrench. I wonder if I need to pull that "neutral safety solenoid". I also remember now that when I had the linkage rod hooked up the shifter was in the Hi unlocked position. The lever looked a little bent on the TC when I got it so it could just need to be adjusted and it is in neutral or my trans isn't kicking in for some reason (I hope that isn’t confusing). |
key in the on/ run position, set mparking brake, transmission in neutral and it should go into gear
|
I did that but no dice. I'll try again after work, if it doesn't work I'm going to remove that safety switch and see what happens.
Edit: I'm not so sure I had the brake on so I'll make sure to do that. |
if I remember mine will only go hi to low with trans in nuetral and brake on or foot on brake it is so you do not grind the un-syncronized gears in t case
