Transfer case knock when coasting

Hi

My 98 disco 1 just started to produce a knock whenever i take the foot off the gas pedal. I can feel it if i rest my hand on the transfer case selector.

the transfer case operates well and shifts well in low or lock. It whines lightly but i have to turn everything off to hear it, so i doubt it comes from it.

The u joints look ok but I can't be sure : how do you check them?

Anything else i should check?

Thanks for any hint

Start by checking the fluid level.

X2. Also check the diff fluids front and rear and grease all the Ujoints

I'm having the same issue with my 98 disco. It's not as bad since I replaced the rear driveshaft but sometimes when I step off the gas or when i shift it into reverse I hear a clunk noise. Ill check my fluids as recommended though. I have a pretty good idea how expensive a "used" transfer case is, so are there any other alternatives in a worse case scenario? Anything like rebuild kits etc?

Fluid level is fine, regreased all ujoints.

Will report back later this week if that made any difference.

Thanks for all hints

check your engine mounts.

When were the fluids in the transfer case and diff's last changed?

What weight are you using? The heavier fluid will help quieten them.

I you want to be 100% sure remove the inspection panel. If it's cooked you will see missing chunks on the gears.
