Transfer case knock when coasting
Hi
My 98 disco 1 just started to produce a knock whenever i take the foot off the gas pedal. I can feel it if i rest my hand on the transfer case selector. the transfer case operates well and shifts well in low or lock. It whines lightly but i have to turn everything off to hear it, so i doubt it comes from it. The u joints look ok but I can't be sure : how do you check them? Anything else i should check? Thanks for any hint |
Start by checking the fluid level.

X2. Also check the diff fluids front and rear and grease all the Ujoints |
I'm having the same issue with my 98 disco. It's not as bad since I replaced the rear driveshaft but sometimes when I step off the gas or when i shift it into reverse I hear a clunk noise. Ill check my fluids as recommended though. I have a pretty good idea how expensive a "used" transfer case is, so are there any other alternatives in a worse case scenario? Anything like rebuild kits etc?

Fluid level is fine, regreased all ujoints.
Will report back later this week if that made any difference. Thanks for all hints |
check your engine mounts.

When were the fluids in the transfer case and diff's last changed?
What weight are you using? The heavier fluid will help quieten them. |
I you want to be 100% sure remove the inspection panel. If it's cooked you will see missing chunks on the gears.
