Transmission Temp Light

Hello All

I have a 98 Disco and took it out to on a decent drive yesterday. I drove along the Oregon coast and even drove on the beach. I drove in some of the surf in some cases, but washed the truck down really good after the drive.

But on the drive home the transmission temp light came on. I stopped and checked all my fluids and did not have any issues. I also checked the transmission fluid this morning with everything cold and it was full, but the light was still on.

The light did not come on until about a hour or so before we got home. But what has me concerned is the fact that it still hasn't gone off, especially since the owners manual says that it should turn off once the engine/transmission is cold/cooled off.

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? Would the connect shorting out cause it?

thanks
ed

I am willing to bet it's just the trans temp sensor.

errose2002 02-06-2011 06:58 PM

Yeah I think it might be just the sensor failing because there was no smell of the transmission being hot or anything like that either.

Salt water got into the trans temp connector, first try cleaning them with electrical contact cleaner.

45 minutes after I left the beach the light came on? I guess will jack it up and clear things first before I look at replacing the sensor.

Spike555 02-06-2011 07:40 PM

Yes after 45 min it could come on, it probably started to corrode and shorted out.

Ok thanks Spike. I will look into it and see if I can get it cleaned up and get that light off. Just to make sure that I am sure that I am working on the right part, the temp sensor is located on the transfer case where the transmission and tcase come together correct?

Spike555 02-07-2011 06:28 PM

Yes it is located by the t-case.

I disconnected the temp sensor and sprayed electrical cleaner into the connectors. I drove around a bit but the light is still on. I am going to assume that sensor is bad, so is there a place to get the sensor from?

Not bad, it's only like $32.
