Default turn off service engine light?

I did a search but found confusing info on where the device is that I need to access to turn off the red service engine light. On a 98 Disco is it under the glove compartment or behind the passenger's right side kick panel? Do I poke one metal object in a hole of a bent paper clip in both holes? Anyone have a photo of the device I need to find? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Is this an every 50K mile thing or is the interval shorter? My Disco has 175K miles on it but I'd put only 5K on it when the light came on.

It's Lucas voodoo. Just remove it and be done with it. Its intended purpose is to tell you to go to the dealer to give them money.

Yeah, I figured that. I have enough trouble with the %&$#% big brother evap system throwing P1447 and P0415 codes plus the usual 1313 & 1314 misfire codes when climbing a hill before it's warmed up.

This should help. The write up is for a DII but my '97 looked the same. Just pull the maroon module (shaped sorta like a relay) and toss it in the trash bin.

I finally got around to resetting the red Service Engine light today. I removed the two plastic screw out fasteners on the passenger kick panel and then two black push fasteners on the fiber panel under the glove box in order to pull the side panel back enough to remove it. I found the emission warning device (brown box on red connector) and pushed its connector upward to remove it from the mounting tab on the side sheet metal and worked it out from under the wiring loom. There were already two holes in the top of the device and pushing a small screwdriver into the larger middle hole did not turn off the SE light so I got a drill set and a #27 drill bit just fit through the hole and I tried that. The light was still on with the ignition on so I put a smaller drill through the smaller hole and then used the small screwdriver to connect between the two drills and then the light was off when I looked. Note that after the first attempts did not turn it off I was going to just remove the device, but the connector did not come off easily – I moved it down a little bit but it seemed stuck on the device so I continued with the two drills. The ignition was still on and the SE light off so I turned the ignition off while I put the device connector back on its mounting tab and replaced the side panel and under panel push fasteners. When I turned the ignition on again the Service Engine light came on briefly and then went out. When I started the engine it again came on briefly but then went out. I guess that is normal and I had not noticed it before.

Hope I remember how to do this if it ever comes on again.

My 97 XD started having a Disco Light for a red Service Engine Light, then it came on solid. Tore open the kick panel, and removed that sucker. Out of curiosity I opened it up to find a battery that looked like it died 20 years ago..... Pretty sure that little brown box = way past it's due date lol.
