Will the R380 manual gearbox go on any 3.9 or 4.0 Disco 1?

What about fitting it to a 4.6 D2 ?

R380! What a deal!.....

Any feedback or info on the synchro's?

The R380 was used at least until the end of the DII line in Discoveries and after that in Defenders. So with the correct bell housing it will work in Series Rovers through Discovery II and 2007 Defenders.

thanks for all the info everyone.

I have another question. From what I've read, the '97 D1 was a better machine than the 94-96 models - I'm talking about the 3.9 versus the "4.0" motor. Sounds like the latter was a fair bit more reliable.

Then it sounds like the D2 with the 4.6 had lots of problems again making the last years of the D1 the best bet. (that and the 5 speed option)

Am I right..... ?

The 3.9 and the 4.0 are the same engine, with the same displacement. They only labeled the 3.9 as a 4.0 to differentiate between the two engine control systems. The '96 is the '4.0' engine, by the way.

And yes, there are 5 speeds. I have a '96 SE7 with power everything, 5 speed manual tranny, CA emissions crap, rear a/c, jump seats, power sunroofs, front brush guard, rear light guards, fog lights, yadda yadda yadda...Mine is so loaded with crap, it even came with the much coveted intermittent high idle!:o

Ah, the intermittent high idle option. Sounds desirable!

Yes, and a very expensive option as well. But even with that, I still love the thing!

I'm basically looking for a d1 like yours I think Chris-Bob. I need low miles and a 5 speed. No rush though, i have transport right now, but I think if a nice example came up I'd try to pick it up.

I read all the buying guides and tech articales on this board. anything specific to the manual tranny I should check out?

Thanks. So I should be able to find one then if I look hard enough.

Am I right in thinking the Disco 2 was not available with a 5 speed in North America or is that also incorrect?

Disco 2 has no 5 speed manual. Only 1994-97.
