Vehicle Speed Sensor good or bad?
98 D1 speedometer does not work. ODBII code P0500 (VSS) registered by ECU. I removed the VSS and checked resistance (1800 ohms, not sure what the specs are). I hooked up a 35k rpm dremel tool to the input shaft while the vehicle's engine was running and the speedometer read about 30 mph.
Is the VSS bad or is something else going wrong since it measured the speed of the dremel? The part is $200 from Atlantic British...don't want to buy a new one if there may be something else causing the issue. Any input is much appreciated. Thanks guys.

It read a speed, but we don't know if it was the correct speed.
On a D1, if the VSS acts up, it can indicate much higher than actual speed easily on the OBDII port. At that point, the ECU assumes you have decided to play on the Autobahn, and it begins shutting down injector pulses (cuts fuel) and withholds spark. In effect, an computerized big brother to make you slow down. I think this happens when it thinks you have approached 114 mph, the escape velocity for the vehicle. If you charged the flux capacitor who knows what could happen next.
