Window Radio Antenna options?
So, I have a 98 disco. There is no radio antenna.
It has a prior salvage title. The engine bay and front footwell areas are white. The rest of the truck is dark green. It looks like someone welded the front half of a body to the rear half of a body. I checked the cargo windows, and there were no amplifiers or even places on the windows to hook anything up. While doing my rust work in the front footwell areas of both sides, I found coiled up wires attached to a small plastic box. Yup, these are my antenna wiring and amplifiers. Aside from finding a set of antenna windows, what are my options as far as hooking up an antenna to the dual antenna stock setup? |
One outdoor antenna, attach to the one that is set up for AM/FM. The other is FM only (try both). My PO installed aftermarket radio, and he selected the wire for FM only. No oldie AM stations for me.
They used 2 FM antennas for "diversity reception" which was needed by the built in the glass antennas. Put three or four more on of various sizes and people will think you are undercover incident command vehicle. |
All '98's had antennas in the windows.
Go to Radio Shack, buy a fender mounted antenna and antenna wire, drill a hole and run the wire. |
So you may have the front half of a 98 and the rear half of an earlier one?
I have deleted my factory system totally if there was any way to get anything for you I would, but the ant is built into the glass or whatnot so Spike's solution may be your bet option or run antenna elements inside the vehicle yourself, like our receivers had back in the day. Or just ditch radio and go 4G or tablet or whatnot. |
So, If i use an aftermarket antenna, do I ditch the amplifier?
|
Yep, no need for it as you will have a full size "quarter wave" unit, the amps were needed to make up for the directional nature of the window loops. Unless you are a long way out in the boonies.

Two coat hangers and a roll of tin foil would also do well. or wrap lots of copper strands around the roof rack....
