A little late to the party, but I used my 04 as a moving van yesterday for my younger brother and covered around 500km without issue.
Assuming you keep up your maintenance and know the condition of your vehicle 500 to 1000 km offroad trip should be no problem in a D2. Things may happen belts break, electrical stuff goes south,hydraulics fail. But that is true of any vehicle no matter the age. I have seen Jeeps, 2 year old Dodge pickups with failed engines and transmissions on forest service roads. Look after it and is should get you home - oh and always stop and check on fellow off roaders who look like they may be having a problem a bit of good karma never hurts |
10k not enough
If you don’t do your own work 10k will not be enough. it will barely be enough if you have an experienced Land Rover Shop and they are extremely honest. |

Man, with 10k in your pocket, ride over to a stealership and get yourself a good LR3. I've had one of those for about 5 years now, daily driver, and it has remained a wonderful luxury car with no mechanical issues whatsoever... except for the suspension freezing up in -20f weather, but who can blame it?

I recently had my ‘03 in at a Land Rover Shop, and they said the LR3 is really reliable. So, that may be the Smart money, but drive both, and see what you are happy with. You can easily replace the Thermostat and hoses yourself, and get a greaseable front driveshaft for less than a grand. Those are the two really critical areas. They are now 14+ years old so wear and tear will be an issue, ancillaries like window channels, motors, switches, etc. you may have to live with being broken. My rear windshield wiper has not worked in years. I’ve learned how to wrench with a lot of help from these guys, and I really love my ‘03. |
