02 Disco front grinding noise

I was driving my 02 Disco yesterday, which has been driving fine, and as I went to make a turn, it would not move, even though it was still running. It would not go forwards or backwards. I turned the car off, and re-started. It then would move, but it had this loud grinding noise comining from the front wheel section.

Has anyone experienced anything like this. Its at a shop being looked at right now. Hopefully the extended warranty will cover what it is.

STOP DRIVING the truck and have it towed to your local shop.
Possible failures would be the front drive shaft, front CV joint, front or rear diff failure.
All of these can be expensive to fix so have it towed and don't drive it.

Thanks Mike,

I was actually about 100 miles from where I live, by myself with my 2 1/2 year old twins in the back. Not a great day.I had it towed down to the shop. Will keep posted and let you know what the diagnosis is.

Yes, do get back to use with the problem and the estimate.

Update - call from shop - Front differential needs to be replaced. According to them, its a pretty know issue with LR's. Is this correct. Has anyone experienced having to have their front differential changed at 63k miles. What would cause this to give..

Doesn't sound right unless something significant happened to it. Differentials don't just "break" like that.

Wow. Not sure but I don't recall ever hearing of having to replace the whole thing and at only 63,000. Sounds fishy to me. That's gonna really hurt the pocket. Damn.

If your warranty covers it, let them do it. Rovers have weak diffs. and it wouldn't hurt to get a new one. I would have them chekc the front driveshaft too...

The Rover diff is the weakest item in your truck other then the front drive shaft. I know people who have had to replace both at their 60K services. Rovers have only 2 spider gears and will gernade the diff real quick especially id you wheel pretty hard.
Rolondo what sort of an estimate have they quoted you, you may want to consider either up grading to a TruTrac or other diff, or buy a used diff from a good scourse like

I just got the car about a month ago. I purchased an extended warranty, which covers the front and rear diffferential. The only thing is that the shop has to wait for an adjuster to come and look at it.They want to see the cause of the failure (sudden failure or what?). Will keep everyone posted..
