maybe just a bad crank position sensor and the alarm business is a red herring... multiple problems at once can be confusing.

Usually the light blinks rapidly when theres an alarm error.

I've had this happen to me. I had to lock and unlock the doors.

There was also this time...I was sitting in the vehicle and the light was blinking rapidly, I had the key in the ignition and I pressed the lock and unlock but it still wouldnt start.

I then got out pressed the button, lock and unlock. Still wouldnt start.

I then re-closed the back door, it wasnt all the way closed, and then it all worked.

Idk what actually fixed it, not sitting in the rover, keys out of ignition, doors all closed. But then it started. Haven't had an issue since.

Ooops....I thought I sent a reply, but it must not have posted....I don't know about the alarm light....all the dash lights come on and are steady, not flashing.....I don't think the red light that flashes when the alarm is set is on, but I can't really say for sure.

When I lock the doors the alarm light blinks really fast for several seconds then stops and goes to the slow blink.

I am very grateful to all of you for your help....I'm going to take all of your advice to my mechanic as he is as frustrated with this problem as I am and has been very patient and tried to keep the costs down for me. He really likes the little Disco....I tease him that it's because it will send him on vacations to Bermuda!

Have your mechanic slide underneath and jumper the starter terminals...before doing anything else...especially moving it. You could have a bad spot on your starter that only appears randomly...and if you move it...it may start from the tow job.
