On the whole fan removal thing, I removed mine with the same cresent wrench we used on spikes, so there can't be that much diference between D1 and D2s. As far as the smacking it with a hamer goes there have been several times in my experience where this was all that would work, but you have to understand that you are taking a risk when you do it this way. The water pumps used now days have a face seal that has one carbon disc and one ceramic disc with spring tension on them, that is what keeps the water in you'r cooling system not a rubber seal. As an unintended consequence of the smacking the fan clutch trick it is, on rare ocasions, to crack one of the very brittle discs in the seal creating a leaking water pump. If I am replacing the water pump as is usually the case then it doesn't matter, if not I'm a bit more cautious.
