2003 Discovery engine options

he right
He's right. i just sold my 95 4.0 SE yesterday for parts and we where saying the same about the gems. They have alot less problems also...I know as i drove it for 8 years.... That RR would beat the doors of my DII. that gems was quick ...
If you can get it for $2,000.00 then putting a diesel in for 10k would be worth it....and you still in for under what they sell for with a new motor...

Agreed the 4.0 seems to have fewer problems (at least compared to an '03 4.6, maybe not an '04). But it's more like 27 hp and 50 ft-lb torque difference between the 4.0 and the 4.6. That's significant to me.

There is a guy selling a 2004 with 145k miles on it. He has an engine knock problem. Had the top end redone but the knock is still there. Runs great, no lights, just loud knock. Silver exterior, black interior in very nice shape. Sounds like it is one to drive til it dies, meanwhile find a good motor out of a wreck. Phil

I have 3 (yes three ) discos 98, 03 and '04 with '89k, 125k, and '130k miles respectively, the most problemmatic has been the '03 as we have a cracked head stud, and need to add coolant every week. the rest of the truck is fine. If you have the $50k to replace these trucks, godspeed. If not the engine can be done for $5k or less. The rest of the truck is as good as or better than the others out there. You decide. My kids love the discos for the $$, but have me as a last resort.

I don't know, if the truck is in good shape and you have access to an engine at a good price it might not be a bad deal. Discos sell for quite a bit around here too, and they sell fast. We have two dealers within 30 minutes of each other and parts and service are never an issue if you need it. That seems to make a difference.
